Author-Invited Reviewers are Out. Advisers are in.

Cureus has refined its peer review process to better define the roles that support the integrity and quality of published research. As a result, ​​we have made the decision to remove author-suggested peer reviewers from the peer review process. Instead, authors are asked to suggest five colleagues or mentors to serve as Advisers.

Role distinctions:

• Peer Reviewers are experts invited by Cureus to conduct the formal independent review of manuscript submissions, ensuring each publication meets the highest standards of quality and accuracy.
   
• Advisers are colleagues and mentors invited by the authors to provide optional advisory feedback. While their input is not part of the formal review process, their expertise helps authors strengthen and refine their work prior to publication.

Cureus was founded with the goal of breaking down barriers in publication and embracing the medical community of authors and peer reviewers to advance medical knowledge. Mentors and colleagues often have excellent advice and feedback for authors, but should not serve as peer reviewers due to the potential conflict of interest per COPE guidelines.

By replacing author-invited peer reviewers with Advisers, we are empowering authors to seek feedback from colleagues and mentors while also avoiding potential conflicts of interest from peer reviewers.

This update reflects our commitment to a transparent and collaborative publishing process, where both peer reviewers and advisers play complementary roles in advancing the quality of open-access medical research.
